Train Memes ------------------------------------------------------ Check these out or i will cry • Twitter - / vaazkl • Discord - / discord ----------------------------------------------------------
9:09 Alright, this might need explaining. To put it simply, there’s a type of freight yard called a “hump yard” that is pretty much powered by gravity. They roll from a hill and are sorted at the bottom. The “Do Not Hump” on this boxcar means to not shunt it like that.
Yeah, it's how bigger yards do their switching, the reason why it says do not hump is because it most likely has something fragile like glass or something
@@ViperZero523 in this case, it is a track geometry car which uses special equipment to check the track's condition. using it in a hump yard could damage the electronics inside.
The Mercury train wasn't called that because it contained the poisonous metal of the same name, it was simply named after the Roman God of traveling. As far as I know it was only phased out by newer locomotives after many years of service. They were one of the first Railroad engines to use roller bearings on the wheel axles, something that's now common on wheel or track based transportation
They did have quite a few accidents though. Although that seems more to do with bad management of the railway network as a whole rather than a problem with them specifically. Not sure entirely why they're so adamant no one wants them back. Probably just not a great idea having regular coal fired trains runing into New York any more. US city air quality is bad enough as it is these days.
@@Karagianis they probably want them back because none of them are left today, all of the mercury steam engines were scrapped, like most new york central steam engines, its a pitty but well, thats what happens on a railroad, the older the engine, the sooner the company will want to retire and replace it.
@@Karagianis With NYC specifically, it had to do with running trains into poorly ventilated tunnels that lead into Grand Central Station (not Terminal, the predecessor). A major accident with serious loss of life was caused by an engineer being unable to see a signal in a smoke-filled tunnel, so steam engines were banned from operating within most of Manhattan.
8:40 technically its a metro but it runs both above and underground 18:05 this was the Thalys a dutch/belgian version of the French TGV(Train a Grande Vitesse, Highspeed Train) its used for the Amsterdam-Paris service with stopovers at Schiphol, Rotterdam, Antwerp Brussel and Paris(also Disneyland Paris). its now merged together with Eurostar(which already operated highspeed trains from British rail from London to Paris and Amsterdam. Thalys also operated in Germany and that branch also falls under Eurostar as of now
6:11 keep switching the track switch until the trolly gets to the track separation then it will go off the rails in between the two tracks. Everyone is saved and you beat the game! (You can now play as Luigi)
About that train conductor hitting the man who was taking selfies, I saw the video on Reddit and if I remember correctly, he kicked him to save him so he wouldn’t get hurt by the train or killed. Take this with a grain of salt because I have not looked into the actual backstory
Yeah that's what I remember hearing back when the video went viral. Seemingly from the conductors perspective he could see the guy's head would've collided with the train, so that's why he kicked him
2:22 it is called walking assuming that your city is not car dependent poohole like for example LA, than you can walk to store under 10 minites on a nice wide sidewalk with a nice shade from trees between you and the road.
10:20 The sad part is that's probably a Model railway meme, not someone literally buying a full sized locomotive instead of a house. It's literally that size compared to him.
I fell on top of a pregnant woman in the train last week. ✨story time✨ I have physical handicaps which make it hard for me to stand for long times. I was sitting in a full train and I already had someone sitting next to me. 2 pregnant women entered the train and asked if they could sit at our spot. I explained my disability and they refused to believe it. They went to the staff and I explained the staff the same. Even the staff did not believe me. I had to stand next to the seats i was just pulled out off. About 20 minutes later i collapsed onto the woman sitting next to the path. She was so mad and a staff member saw it and thought I was faking it. I was send out of the train on a station I didn’t have to go. I ended up getting too late at school for my exam and wasn’t allowed to do it that day. Worst school day ever…
Can't offer any great advice (just common advice: "doctor's note" and "tell the school", maybe crutches as a visual indicator), but it's a shame you had to go through that. Hope today was much better. Not an expert on law either, but pretty sure the train company will seek the "didn't know, no medical note" route - calling you a potential liar. (Yeah, maybe they should take your word for it but priority seating is a hassle in itself regarding hierarchies/entitlement)
4 or 8 "Chuggas" per "Choo Choo" makes sense. Each "Chugga" is one beat out of four. (Technically it is 2 out of 8 due to the two stressed beats. Each "Choo" is two beats out of four. That makes it: chugga-chugga-chugga-chugga chugga-chugga-chugga-chugga CHOO-CHOO (Quarter notes are lowercase, half notes are caps)
As an avid rail enthusiast, it's so fun seeing other rail enthusiasts here elaborating on certain terms and facts from the video! Also, I really enjoyed it, great job!
2:25 I actually do get a train to the grocery store. The next nearest large grocery shop to me is a 40 minute walk from my flat (a pain to do with heavy groceries) but a 15 minute walk + train + walk again. There's no barriers on either stop, but that's a moot point since I have a season ticket for the same line to get to university and back each day. With a good train network, you too can take a train to the grocery store real quick.
so people know, between 1955 and 1968, there was a huge effort to remove steam trains from the uk network, but the railway workshops couldn't handle scrapping thousands of engines, so they were sent to scrap yards, and in the case of on(barry scrapyard, barry island, south wales), they took the job in but basically didn't have time so most of them ended up being saved(over a 150)
18:21 The lore actually historically accurate, as in the 1950s (When most of the show takes place) Britain started scraping all steam engines to replace them with diesel engines

18:22 Bonus fun fact: This is especially common in the Railway Series (A series of children's books, which is where Thomas the Tank engine originates) and multiple characters (Oliver and Douglas, who are both major characters to the setting) have origin stories that involve escaping scrapping.
